John P. Purcell, Jr. was sworn in as Mayor of the City of Lawton on May 3, 2004.  He previously served on the Lawton City Council from 1995 to 2002.

During his career in U.S. Army, Mayor Purcell held positions as Chief, Management and Budget Office (Comptroller) US Army, Advisor to Hawaii Army National Guard, Battalion Executive Officer, U.S. Army, Professor and University Department Chairman at Cameron University, Director of Resource Management/Comptroller U.S. Army Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Vice President Finance & Contracting.  He currently holds the position of Vice President of Finance and Administration for a small corporation providing vision care service.

Mayor Purcell is married to Jan, an elementary school counselor, and has three grown children and three grandchildren.

The Mayor holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Florida and a Masters of Business Administration from Syracuse University.   He is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Advanced Comptroller Course; U.S. Navy Command and General Staff College; U.S. Army Command and General Staff College; Field Artillery Officer Advanced Course and the Army Airborne School.  He serves on various community boards including the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, Rotary International, Boy Scouts of America, Arts for All, Inc. and Tau Kappa Epsilon-Cameron University.
