Federal Government

This is a work in progress.

The United States of America, is a republic as defined by the Constitution.

The United States under the constitution, is broken up into three separate branches.

3branches The United States, has a division of powers so that no one part of the government is stronger than the other.

The first branch of government addressed in the constitution is the legislative branch.  The United States, has a bicameral legislative branch.  They are the House of Representatives, and the Senate.

The House of Representatives, is divided up based on the population of the many states. With each member serving a two year term.

The Senate, is divided evenly among the many states, with each state getting two Senators.  Unlike members of the House of Representatives, Senators serve a six year term.   A change that occurred to this process took place when the amendment to the constitution allowing for the direct election of Senators.  Until that point, it was the state legislatures, not the general population, that chose the senators.

The collective term for both the Senate, and the House of Representatives is Congress.
